The Real Housewives of New York
Season 15, Episode 6: “A Shot of Mess-cal”
Grade: D
I’ll admit, I might be angrier at this week’s episode of RHONY, thanks to a few mitigating factors. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but Donald Trump was elected president. Again. Bravo aired this episode as counter-programming, I assume, but I didn’t watch it last night because I was busy watching the election results. After Kamala Harris’ devastating loss, I tried to watch RHONY in bed and had to turn it off. It wasn’t just boring, it was annoying. We’re six episodes into the season and absolutely nothing has happened on the show. I don’t even care that it doesn’t feel like a Housewives show, it doesn’t even feel like an interesting television show, period.
Last season, I placed the women into weekly power rankings. This year, they’re all hovering somewhere near the bottom. Jenna is more amusing this year, but I still don’t know why she’s on TV. Brynn is aggravating: she plays a sexpot on camera, then gets angry when people call it out. Jessel is less entertaining than this year, and most of her scenes make me wonder if she and Pavit even enjoy each other’s company. Erin would rather not share anything about her real life on camera. Sai is surprisingly the most improved housewife this season. Racquel is a great new addition with plenty of personal drama, but she’s still not hooking me the way a new housewife should. Ubah is annoying and always looking to create a moment and it comes off as inauthentic.
It took me all afternoon to watch this episode because it was so fucking boring. It failed as entertainment and it failed at taking my mind off the election. Thanks a lot, Bravo.
