I want to take you back to 2001.
On The WB, the now-defunct network where Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson’s Creek aired, a reality competition series, Popstars, aired. The pop girl group Eden’s Crush, produced by David Foster (!!), was formed during the series’ first season1, featuring a then-unknown Nicole Scherzinger. Ivette Sosa, Maile Misajon, Ana Maria Lombo, and Rosanna Tavarez were the other members.2 Their first single was “Get Over Yourself,” which produced a music video that older millennial gay men throw on at pregames to puzzling stares from anyone under the age of 33.
Unfortunately, their debut album Popstars has never been available on streaming. It’s a similar situation to the debut album from Canadian girl group Girlicious, who were formed on The CW’s3 Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious4. This series, in the vein of Popstars, was created by Robin Antin to replicate the success of The Pussycat Dolls, which Nicole Scherzinger led after Eden’s Crush disbanded.
Today, I was en route to brunch when I got a text from my friend Nader. The debut (well, only) album from Eden’s Crush was FINALLY streaming!
It’s almost as if Scherzinger willed this into existence herself. My friend who attended Sunset Blvd. on Broadway recently, told me he overheard Scherzinger introducing herself to the girl group Katseye backstage, and that she told them about her past in a pop girl group. She didn’t bring up The Pussycat Dolls, she only talked about her time in Eden’s Crush. Ouch.
But now, a group that only a certain age group of millennial adults remembers, is finally available for younger generations to experience. Well, if someone on TikTok makes the album go viral or something. Otherwise, I doubt anyone not reading this current newsletter has any idea it’s even available to stream now. LOL. Produced by David Foster, the album also features songwriting credits from Kandi Burrus (“No Drama”), Fergie (“What’s Good 4 the Goose”), Linda Thompson5 (“Promise Me”), American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi (“Two Way”), and a cover of Prince’s “Glamorous Life.” This a place for legends, okay??
The second season formed the group scene 23, featuring actor Josh Henderson. Their label dissolved before they could tour as *NSYNC’s opening act.
American Idol alum Nikki McKibbin was one of the potentials, but she didn’t make the cut.
The not-defunct television network that Buffy moved to after The WB canceled it.
Their debut album was finally put on streaming services a few years ago.
Mother of The Hills’ Brody Jenner!
Eden’s Crush was SO important to me. Thank you for this journalism 🫡 (I think they were better than The Pussycat Dolls! Each girl was memorable and could sing)
Scene 23 didn’t get to open for NSYNC, but Eden’s Crush (and Samantha Mumba) did for the Celebrity tour. Also glad I no longer need to go find a cd player anytime I want to listen to this album!
